Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa expressed his displeasure over the Government’s sudden decision of appointing a committee to decide the boundaries of the divisions for Local Government (LG) bodies.

Accordingly, the Government has decided to appoint a Five-Member Committee headed by former Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya to decide the relevant boundaries to enable the Government to hold the forthcoming elections.

The Five-Member Committee was appointed by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardana while the relevant Government Gazette has also been published.

Addressing the media, the Opposition Leader said it is unnecessary to establish a Committee to decide the boundaries, especially at this crucial juncture, when not a single citizen has requested the Government to establish such a Committee. He said people are asking not unnecessary Committees from the Government at this juncture when almost all citizens are going through tough times due to the spiralling Cost of Living.

He said even global statistics reveal that nearly 5.7 million people including children are facing the brunt of the economic crisis.

“Since the Government has no proper plans to overcome this economic crisis, conducting a fresh election to appoint new leaders is the best solution at this moment,” he said.

The Opposition Leader reiterated that people do not want to see new boundaries of divisions at this juncture, but they need a new Government that could solve the economic crisis.

He said not only the SJB but also other opposition members in the Parliament are speaking against the Government’s sudden decision to appoint a Committee to decide on the boundaries of the divisions for Local Government Bodies.

He said all are of the view that the Government is trying to postpone the forthcoming elections by appointing such unnecessary Committees. The Opposition Leader therefore urged the Government to hold elections as early as possible without establishing unwanted Committees.
