I’m not ready to die in my 20′s. I’m not speaking of literally dying. I’m talking about the dying that happens on the inside. The “resorting that this is everyone’s life” lie. Believing that working for a 401k match is living the dream.
It’s not my dream. But many people get comfortable when they find something safe. Even if they’re unhappy, they find this place where they are comfortably miserable. This idea of the American Dream has taught us that all we need is a mortgage, 2 kids, and a desk job. Work hard now so we can enjoy life when we retire at 65. If the bills get paid, the kids get fed and the car has gas, than life is ok.
I don’t want life to just be “ok” – I want it to be fantastic and exciting.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a big believer in following dreams. But moreover, I’m a believer in working for something bigger than yourself. There is nothing wrong with having a day job, but there is something wrong with working at a job you don’t even like. Your life is short. At my age, I see too many of my peers settling just so they can buy a house and have a fancy car.
There’s so much more to look forward to. You don’t have to pursue your dream full-time, but find something you love and go after it.
Real-Life Dreamers
My wedding photographers started working at a local camera store, then ventured out on their own as a photography business. They’re a couple that balance each other perfectly. He knows the technical side of shooting and she is the artsy one, entirely self-taught in Photoshop. They didn’t allow the fact that they were young stop them. They didn’t give away their service for free because they were just starting out. They knew they could do great work, and over the years they’ve only gotten better, and thus, started charging more.
This weekend, I sat down with my friend as she embarks a new journey. She wants more, so she’s going to challenge herself to accomplish something over the next 24 days (she’s part of the Start Experiment Round 2). After talking about what she couldn’t live without, she decided she’d start a fashion blog while working on some freelance social media marketing. She’ll be doing this all while working her full time job in non-profit.
