With the season 9 premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race only a week away (Friday, March 24 at 9pm!), the supermodel of the world has been making the media rounds. In addition to talking about the show, which is moving to VH-1 from Logo, EMMY winner Ru (I love that I can say that now) also revealed that he’s a married man.
The always snappily dressed, 56-year-old entertainer let the cat out of the bag about his relationship status on Wednesday’s episode of Hollywood Today Live (one of the hosts is Drag Race judge Ross Matthews).
During the interview, he confessed that he’s been married his partner of 23 years, dancer Georges LeBar for a few months now. Ru said, “We got married on our 23rd [anniversary]. I met him on the dance floor at Limelight [club in New York City] in 1994, on his birthday. So we got married on his birthday, the anniversary of when we met, this year — in January.” He went on to say that they had been planning on tying the knot for quite some time because of, as Ru joked, “tax breaks.”
Georges owns 60,000 acres of ranch land, covering real estate in Wyoming and South Dakota. Ru admitted he didn’t spend much time there, opting to take Georges along on “fabulous” jaunts to places like Maui and New York. He went on to say, “God bless you, Wyoming, but it’s very boring, and it’s the most isolated place on earth.” He’s probably right. I suspect there aren’t a lot of Drag Race viewing parties going on in Wyoming. You can check out the whole clip below:

To commemorate the announcement, on Wednesday, Ru posted a sweet throwback pic of the couple on Twitter, quoting a line from the Supremes’ song “I Hear a Symphony.”

Even if Ru isn’t your bag, he’s using his fame for a very worthy cause, fighting against the defunding of Planned Parenthood. In a recent interview with Marie Claire, where he took aim at POTUS (he’s obviously not a fan, likening him at one point to a “f*cking used car salesman,”) he discussed his passion for raising funds for PP after his mother worked for them. He had some powerful words about it:
Women in our culture have been so marginalized and so really beaten down. We live in a masculine-dominated culture. How dare some man tell a woman what to do with her body. That is outrageous! Outrageous. As a human, that is a big issue for me that really strikes a chord. My mother, she had never really had a job before. Planned Parenthood represented so much freedom for us. For me to watch her blossom into a working woman and self-sufficient after this sort of system of being married to a man and staying home, after that façade fell apart, she built herself back up. In my heart, it represents so much strength, and I think it’s a very important organization.

The “used car salesman” comparison also came up in a Vanity Fair interview, where Ru was asked about the greatest thing he’s learned from Judge Judy, his own personal idol (Ru has famously said, “Only Judy can judge me.”)
Trust your instinct. You have to listen to what the person is saying to be able to understand who they are and what their intention is. And I think that’s something for everyone. When you think about this past election and you see the people who were involved, you can see right through them. You can see, especially him. You can see. I think I bought a car from that guy, a used car, and it was a lemon!

Wow, do I love me some Ru. I have had a long relationship with him. Back in a former life, I interviewed many of the Drag Race queens and even had the privilege to talk to Ru himself, which was one of my most memorable moments as a writer (and he is just as nice as he can be). I auditioned for RuPaul’s Drag U (didn’t get it, which was tragic, as i was hoping for Pandora Boxx to be my coach) and talked Drag Race with Henry Rollins of all people (he’s also a big fan and was a judge on the show to boot).
I’m also extremely excited for the new season, especially with judges like Lisa Kudrow, the B52s, Noah Galvin from The Real O’Neals (although I would have loved if Martha Plimpton was on instead) and, of course, Lady Gaga. Congrats on your nuptials, Ru and best of luck on the new season (like you need it). Check out the eleganza coming your way next week below!
