Christian Varley completed his last 26.2 mile effort between Peel and the island's capital, Douglas, in four hours and 39 minutes, his 19th marathon in 19 days. In the nearly three-week endurance test, he raised $ 102,000 (£ 83,243) for the Manx Solidarity Fund at the time of writing.

The charity was created in response to the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on the Isle of Man, and Varley more than quadrupled its original target of $ 23,250 (£ 19,000).

"What a special day it was. I think I'm going to have a hard time overcoming this," Varley, who won the Isle of Man marathon last year, told Manx Radio.
"The racing side is a little forgotten now, just this final there and even going back to the start of the race; the number of people who sound the horns, it was as if the day had been designated for me.
"The support was just incredible. I knew there would be people arriving, (but) I had no idea what was going to happen and how they ended up with me when I picked up my girl - I've never been so emotional to be honest. "

There have been 335 confirmed cases of coronavirus on the Isle of Man and 24 deaths. Members of the public are allowed to meet in groups of up to 10 people from different households, but social distancing rules remain in place.
Varley is not the only inspired athlete to undertake epic endurance feats during the lockdown.
