Mathugama Magistrate A.I. Hettiyawatte yesterday (03) ordered an individual to pay a fine of Rs. 55,000 when he was arrested and produced before the Mathugama Magistrate for driving at a speed of 149 kilometres per hour on the Southern Expressway without a valid driving license.

Police officers at the Dodangoda checkpoint took into custody a Montero brand jeep which was traveling at high speed from Matara to Colombo.

The driver was ordered to pay this fine subsequent to being produced in Court.The fine was Rs.30,000 for driving without a valid driving license and Rs.25,000 for speeding on the expressway.

The fine was levied on Emba Geekiyanage Roshitha Lasantha De Silva, a resident of Madiwela, Talawathugoda.He was released on Police bail yesterday and was produced before the Mathugama Magistrate’s Court where he was fined.The suspect was taken into custody by Officer-In-Charge of the Dodangoda Access of the Southern Expressway Chief Inspector of Police Upali Dassanayake and Police Sergeant Tharanga and produced before court on the instructions of Director of the Southern Expressway Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Mayura Perera and Assistant Superintendent of Police Vasantha Koralage.
