Royal Caribbean Group RCL Celebrity Cruises has entered the metaverse with the introduction of a digital cruise ship as part of the “Wonderverse” experience. The company has now submitted a patent application to move forward.

Monday, Celebrity Cruises filed a patent application for downloadable virtual products. notably meals, beverages, and entertainment content for use in its Wonderverse, hinting that the corporation is constructing a virtual environment comparable to Meta Platforms’ “Metaverse.”

The patents of Celebrity Cruises include “access tokens” for use in Wonderverse and NFTs to facilitate transactions in its Wonderverse-based retail outlets.

“We’ve revolutionized cruise ship design and now we’re revolutionizing where cruise ships are experienced,” said the Celebrity Cruises chief marketing officer.

The Celebrities Wonderverse has mini-games and activities and was developed in collaboration with virtual event platform builders Surreal Events; the patent also includes editing software for customizing avatars.

Why it is crucial: “See before you sail” with Celebrity Cruises’ Wonderverse to discover a surreal, digital recreation of the company’s newest ship. In addition, guests can interact with digital avatars of the line’s most influential leaders.

The tour allows guests to explore four parts of the ship. Users can also find informative brand videos, such as information on cruise ship destinations for 2024 and 2025, on a single screen in Wonderverse.

This is the second time the cruise company has entered the digital realm. In June, four works of moving art were sold as NFTs. The NFTs, which sold out in ten minutes, featured a figurine of two “live” pigeons aboard one of the cruise ships.

According to statistics from Benzinga Pro, Royal Caribbean shares were trading down 4.16 percent at $51.19 on Monday afternoon.
