What Is A Rottweiler?

Rottweilers are also called “Rottie” and “Rott”. The Rottweiler is the strong breed that are descended from the mastiffs of Roman legions. They are healthy dogs with massive heads. Rottweilers are always in black color with some tan points. Also, they can be slow maturing and almost take 2 to 3 years of age to reach their full size.

Rottweilers serve as family guardians and are very friendly. Due to their large size, they need special care and training. A well-bred Rottweiler is gentle and confident. Rottweilers show a “wait and see” attitude when they meet new people.

How Long Do Rottweilers Live?

The Rottweilers have the average lifespan of 8-10 years. It is important to know that female Rottweilers live 10 months more than male Rottweilers. Many large dogs such as Rottweilers have shorter lifespans. Normally, small dogs have a larger lifespan.

Common Health Problems That Reduce Rottweilers lifespan

Aortic stenosis:

Aortic stenosis is the cardiovascular disease that affects the Rottweilers. In this condition, there is the obstruction of blood flow to the heart. Dog’s aorta becomes narrow and causes difficulty to pass through the blood from the aortic valve. So, Rottweiler’s heart has to do double work to keep constant blood flow. It can lead to heart attack and sudden death of the dog.

Therefore, aortic stenosis can reduce the lifespan of your beloved Rottweiler.

Bloat:

Bloat is also known as Gastric Dilation Volvulus (GDV). It is a life-threatening condition common in large dogs like Rottweilers. It mostly develops when the dog eats a lot of food and then drinks large amounts of water.

In this disease, the dog’s stomach filled with gas and then twisted. It cuts off the blood supply to the stomach and leads to sudden drop of blood pressure of the dog. If this condition is not treated on time, it causes death of Rottweilers.

Osteosarcoma:

The common cause of death in Rottweilers is cancer. Osteosarcoma affects the large breed including Rottweilers. Cancer can be cured by chemotherapy or radiation. With treatment, your dog can live nine months to 2 years. Moreover, dogs can adapt to walk on three legs. They do not suffer the side effects of chemotherapy such as nausea or hair loss.

Osteochondritis Dissecans:

Osteochondritis Dissecans can affect all the joint areas of the Rottweilers. It occurs at 4-6 months when the cartilage is turning into the joints. In some cases, the bones grow too fast without the proper alignment. It can cause the bone to break when these bones are pressing against each other. The symptoms of osteochondritis dissecans are the same as hip and elbow dysplasia. But this disease is more painful due to break down of bone.

The breaks and misalignment of the bones are detected through X rays. Osteochondritis dissecans can be treated with surgery.
