On Thursday when news broke that Rose McGowan’s ex manager, Jill Messick committed suicide, reports started circulating that the Hollywood film producer killed herself after being drawn into the Harvey Weinstein story by her former client.
Now, Jill Messick family is also collaborating that story.
Messick had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and struggled with depression for years, the family said. But added that she also had been distraught from the recent spotlight on her after details emerged on alleged sexual misconduct by Harvey Weinstein, saying she “became collateral damage in an already horrific story.”
Rose McGowan alleged that Weinstein raped her at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997. She recently said that Messick, who was her manager at the time, failed to support her fight against Weinstein and then took a job with him.
Messick’s family says McGowan reported the incident to her without calling it rape, but that Messick, realizing something inappropriate if not illegal had happened, reported it to her senior bosses months before she went to work under Weinstein at Miramax.

“Seeing her name in the headlines again and again, as part of one person’s attempt to gain more attention for her personal cause, along with Harvey’s desperate attempt to vindicate himself, was devastating . . . It broke Jill, who was just starting to get her life back on track. What makes Rose’s inaccurate accusations and insinuations against Jill ironic was that she was the first person who stood up on Rose’s behalf, and alerted her bosses to the horrific experience which Rose suffered.”
