‘Roots’ Actress Olivia Cole Has Passed Away, She Was 75

Actress Olvia Cole, who played Mathilda in Roots has passed away, she was 75.

According to Deadline, Cole died at her home in San Miguel Allende, Mexico on January 19th.

Susie Schwarz from SBD Partners, where Cole had been for over 35 years, told Deadline that, as far as they knew, she had not been ill. The New York Times said she died from a heart attack.

In 1977, the actress won an Emmy for Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Drama Series for her role in Roots as Mathilda, the wife of Ben Vereen’s Chicken George.

Cole also starred opposite Oprah Winfrey in the 1989 miniseries The Women of Brewster Place. 

According to Essence, The actress had been living in Mexico for 30 years and was married to actor Richard Venture before their divorce in 1982.
