Rooting and Cheering for Auschwitz

By Gldmeier @gldmeier
Can you imagine Israelis and Jews rooting and cheering for Auschwitz?
Remember when Israel first flew Israeli Air Force jets over the train tracks by Auschwitz for the first time in 2003? The symbolism, the commemoration, the attitude... [many] Israelis and Jews all over were proud. Rooting and Cheering for AuschwitzThen there were also bands made up from prisoners who performed for the Nazis and guests. They probably received many cheers, though likely not by their fellow Jews.
Now, for the first time, an Israeli hockey player has signed to play with the Auschwitz hockey team. Is that stunned silence I hear?
Again, according to TOI, Eliezer Sherbatov has signed to play for the team in Oswiecim (aka Auschwitz) and is not afraid of the Polish fans screaming anti-semitic chants at him, as they are known to do. Sherbatov wants to help his team win all the championships and let it be known that an Israeli Jew helped them win it all.
Good luck Sherbatov.  Make us proud. Maybe one day Auschwitz will be known for things other than the concentration camp, like the hockey championships you bring it, I guess.
Go Auschwitz! Go Auschwitz!
