Romancing The Stone: 40th Anniversary- Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Danny Devito
Quick Take: If I had a bucket list of films I knew I needed to watch for whatever reason, I would have had this Robert Zemeckis flick on there. It has been on there for 40 years, and it took an anniversary release for me to get off my ass and finally knock this one out. I think every film critic who isn’t claiming Medicare still has films. There were just so many years of film before I was born, and then every year, more is created. Still, before I watch whatever Netflix has regurgitated for the week, I should catch up more.
Kathleen Turner plays a romance novelist who ends up having to go to South American to rescue her sister, despite living a boring life in her apartment. She writes about adventure she has never experienced. I can relate. She runs into a swarthy individual (Michael Douglas), much like the sexy adventurers she writes in her fiction, and due to mutual interests, he agrees to help her. Or, will she help him? Obviously, comically insane hijinx ensues, and so does romance for the romance novelist. Douglas and Turner make for a great on screen pairing, and would later retrain for Jewel Of The Nile after this. Obviously, there was more franchise potential here, especially for everyone who claims we’ll never get another Indiana Jones. But, alas, Douglas had other plans.
The audio description here is a bit old. I know people who still love this film, and recommend it. It hasn’t faded away, and there’s certainly an argument for an updated track if they ever do a restoration. It might not be the most original work of its kind, but this was when robert Zemeckis was having his strongest output, and the movie is a lot of fun. For more, check out the video.
