The rebel alliance must make some risky moves against the empire to try and stop them. Including stealing the plans for the Death Star which has just been revealed, setting up the epic saga that then follows.
Yes, I am rather late in seeing this film but I wanted to save it and not rush into it. Ok I just didn’t have a chance after being very tempted to stick around at the cinema for the midnight screening the other week.
I will also add that while I was sitting in the foyer at the cinema the news of Carrie Fisher’s death started to be announced and I thought that made it a nice tribute to then be seeing the film. But the final scene/moments were therefore even more cutting. I am not even going to lie I actually did feel myself filling up with tears, I just was not prepared for that at all.
This story as part of the Star Wars universe fits just before A New Hope and links some things together. A very brave and bold mood to then step back after moving forward last year with The Force Awakens. But that is not a problem when you see the film, it is very impressive and gives us another kick ass female character in Jyn Erso. That is certainly something that is fantastic about the Star Wars universe!
We don’t get a very pleasant opening for Jyn and her life though, which I guess is needed to want to fight and be a born fighter having to experience loss. Although she never gives up hope on finding her father Galen Erso, whilst also protecting her own identity to save herself. Cassian Andor is thrown together to work with Jyn and he does not come across likeable at all, to begin with. He grows as the story goes on and I think he is actually a much better character than I first thought he was going to be. The character development for the group of rebel’s that we end up following really was fantastic and we did care about them a lot. That is what sets a film different for myself, if you actually want to see a character succeed and come out on top.
I was a little bit cautious before seeing this film as I really did fall in love with Star Wars last year and think it truly is a fantastic franchise. Mainly the original trilogy though, and I totally loved the Force Awakens. But this is certainly a good film in its own right and offers a different view point of the universe. How everything was then put into motion before we get the Jedi’s returning. Only one lightsaber insight and that is in the final five minutes, but what a cool scene!
I really do think Darth Vader is one of my all time favorite characters in film, unbelievable that the screen time in this film must have only totalled about two minutes and it was totally scene stealing and the best parts. The music to go along with him really is iconic, I am sure you aren’t supposed to love such an evil character so much? But I really do, I am sure I am not the only one who feels that way either.
I actually like the idea that we could be getting more tie in films like this one with totally new stories as it really helps grow the universe. Especially if we get some great characters like in Rouge One. I have to admit that I was wondering what the title was going to link to and as it turns out it actually links to quite a few different things. So I have to say well done for another great chapter in this saga, I throughly enjoyed it. Even if the last scene did break my heart after the sad news of Carrie Fisher’s passing just as I was heading in to watch this film.
