I once had the great pleasure to meet Robert Bork and his wife. He told me about his astonishment as he got closer and closer to the top of the US legal establishment to discover that so much of the legal thinking there was explicitly politicised: "It's as if you wanted all your life to be a top astronomer, only to find that many of the top astronomers in fact practice astrology".
