I would be remiss if I didn't note the passing of Pittsburgh's own George A. Romero. Mr. Romero, age 77, is the filmmaker behind Night of the Living Dead (1968), still one of the best-known and influential horror movies ever. On a shoestring budget of just $114,000, he created the modern zombie movie, a mere prelude on a long, if erratic career that produced movies brilliant, terrible and deranged.
Rest in peace also to the great character actor Martin Landau, who passed away at 89.
