Rio Bravo (1959) Movie Rob’s Review

“Sorry don’t get it done, Dude. That’s the second time you hit me. Don’t ever do it again.” – John T. Chance

Brief Synopsis – A sheriff and his deputies must keep a prisoner locked up until the regional marshal can show up to take him to jail which becomes more difficult when the prisoner’s outlaw brother tries repeatedly to free him from their custody.

My Take on it – Amazing western that is able to once again show how great an actor John Wayne is. His persona in this film places him in a role that seems so realistic in the way it all moves along. The film is able to raise the level of suspense as things more forward in a very gripping fashion.

Wayne gets help from a very talented supporting cast including Walter Brennan, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Angie Dickenson, Ward Bond and John Russell. The action scenes are choreographed really well and they enhance the realism of the story throughout. The story as presented here has been used numerous times over the years because the one man against an army has been able to cross genres quite simply and one can find things like this in space, in a police station or even farther back in the past and that helps make things so much more engrossing to watch unfold.

Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Dean Martin’s agent approached Howard Hawks to consider his client for the role of the drunken deputy Dude. Hawks agreed to meet with Martin at 9:30 the next morning. When Hawks learned that Martin had done a show in Las Vegas until midnight, and hired a plane to fly him to the meeting, he was so impressed that he simply sent Martin to get a costume and told him he had the part. Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10) (no change from original review)
