Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective at the Guggenheim in NYC...

By Boberika @boberika

Even though the Guggenheim was half closed due to a new Picasso Black and White exhibition being installed, I'm glad I still went and made it just in the nick of time before it was closed (that walk from midtown along Central Park is longer than I remembered!). The exhibition I saw was A Retrospective by Rineke Dijkstra which brings together more than 70 photographs and five videos in a major mid-career survey.  The 53-year-old Dutch artist visually coaxes out the emotional subtleties and raw energy that are special to children, adolescents and young adults. It was such an interesting exhibition especially her revelatory work in video from the mid-1990s. In The Buzz Club, Liverpool, UK/ Mystery World, Zaandam, NL (1996–97), and The Krazyhouse (Megan, Simon, Nicky, Philip, Dee), Liverpool, UK (2009). These were presented as multi-channel video installations which give insight into teen personas, self-expression and revealed in how they style themselves, and the dance movements of this time. Once again I leave the Guggenheim impressed…
