Ridley Scott And Michelle Williams Are More Than OK With Kevin Spacey’s Exit From “All The Money In The World”
In a little less than a month, All the Money in the World will be released in theaters with one huge, allegedly-handsy elephant missing from the room: Kevin Spacey. Director Ridley Scott pulled out the Lestoil and stripped the grime of Kevin Spacey off his film by replacing him as J. Paul Getty in reshoots with Christopher Plummer. It will be released on December 22nd, as scheduled.
Both Ridley and All the Money co-star Michelle Williams recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the reshoots, and it sounds like they’re pretty happy Kevin has nothing to do with it anymore.
Ridley tells EW he got along really well with Kevin and he had no idea he was an alleged creeper. But once he heard about Anthony Rapp’s accusations, there was no way they could keep Kevin in the film.
“Someone was like: ‘Guess what?’ And that’s where it began. I sat and thought about it and realized, we cannot. You can’t tolerate any kind of behavior like that. And it will affect the film. We cannot let one person’s action affect the good work of all these other people. It’s that simple.”
Ridley adds that if Kevin had called and apologized, he might have handled things slightly differently (although Ridley maintains he still would have cut Kevin from the film).
As for how 87-year-old Christopher Plummer got the job to replace 58-year-old Kevin, Ridley says Christopher was always on the list. And lucky for Ridley, Christopher Plummer wants to work until he drops dead in the middle of a line read, so there was a good chance he was going to take the part.
Much like Ridley, Michelle – who plays J. Paul Getty’s daughter-in-law Gail Harris in the film – doesn’t exactly beat around the bush when talking about Kevin getting cut. She also narrowed her eyes and hissed at all the other alleged creeps crawling around Hollywood. Two of Michelle’s four Academy Award nominations came from films made with The Weinstein Company, so I wonder whoever could she be talking about here???
“This doesn’t do anything to ease the suffering of people who were all too personally affected by Kevin Spacey, but it is our little act of trying to right a wrong. And it sends a message to predators – you can’t get away with this anymore. Something will be done.”
Michelle also says she “felt better” after Kevin was cut. Now she doesn’t have to spent the entire press tour and subsequent red carpet premiere praying that people ask her about anything besides Kevin Spacey. “Anything but Kevin. Shoot, I’ll even be up for some Dawson’s Creek reunion question.”
