Description:
For Gene and the remaining humans—or hepers—death is just a heartbeat away. On the run and hunted by society, they must find a way to survive in The Vast... and avoid the hungry predators tracking them in the dark. But they’re not the only things following Gene. He’s haunted by the girl he left behind and his burgeoning feelings for Sissy, the human girl at his side.My Rating: The Prey picks up where The Hunt left off. Gene, Sissy, and the Boys are on the run from the horrid vampire-like creatures that have terrorized them all their lives. From the start the excitement and adventure picks up as we soon realize that Gene and the crew aren't quite free and must continue to fight for their lives. Soon they stumble upon a strange community where there are many girls, plenty of food, and strange rules. Of course, things aren't what they seem and as they discover more about the world and the past, they discover that they aren't quite safe, yet. Though, Gene soon questions whether there is a future for them.
When they discover a refuge of exiled humans living high in the mountains, Gene and his friends think they’re finally safe. Led by a group of intensely secretive elders, the civilization begins to raise more questions than answers. A strict code of behavior is the rule, harsh punishments are meted out, young men are nowhere to be found—and Gene begins to wonder if the world they’ve entered is just as evil as the one they left behind. As life at the refuge grows more perilous, he and Sissy only grow closer. In an increasingly violent world, all they have is each other... if they can only stay alive.
On the story...
Gah! This series is so crazy and I can't wait for the next one. Gene really grows as a person as he starts to accept that he isn't some abnormal heper and I liked his character so much more in this installment. Certain plot developments gave me the creeps but I suspect it's supposed to. I spent less time sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation of each moment but I enjoyed the world building that was in its place. Don't get me wrong, there's certainly adventure and excitement but less than The Hunt. One thing I love about this trilogy is that I can't fathom how it will end. I never really know how the characters will get themselves out of each obstacle and it is such an emotional roller coaster. I love it.
On the narrator...
If you'll remember, I compared this narrator to Eeyore and one of my Bar Review professors because of the extreme voice inflection that left me a bit depressed and bored. Well things are certainly different in The Prey. It's now clear that monotone voice were a reflection of Gene's mindset and with his growth we see a change in the voices of Mr. Runnette. I'm so glad I stuck with this trilogy on audio because I thoroughly enjoyed the audio in this installment.
Overall, I'm loving this trilogy and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite dystopian reads. I can't wait to find out how it ends.
