When I saw this book in my library I was instantly drawn to the cover and the book itself- the pages are pink, after all! After hearing a lot of great reviews when this book first came out I'd been looking around for it for a while now, without actually finding it in a bookshop. So I jumped at the chance of taking it out at my library.
From the first page I was hooked. The way in which Sophia Bennett has weaved the words is pure magic. It was fast-paced and made me both laugh and cry- sometimes at the same time! I couldn't put it down, even when my eyes started hurting and I had to eat!
Ted, the main character, was easily likable At the start of the book she was plain and outshone by her older sister, Ava, who Ted thought was a lot prettier than her and was a lot more 'fashionable'. When Ted is spotted by an agent from a modelling company she dismisses it as a scam: why would they pick her when they could have her gorgeous sister, Ava? But then her sister is diagnosed with cancer and Ted's views change. Ava wants her to give modelling a go and she faces a dilemma: listen to her sister and talk to the modelling agency, or just ignore it.
I loved the insight into the fashion world. I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject and so I was glad that it was explained in an easy to follow way.
Throughout the novel we see a change in the characters as they grow and learn from their experiences. Ava, Ted's sister, was inspirational and brave. I really liked her character and found that I wanted to read more about her after the novel had finished. She was completely selfless and encouraged her sister, who looked up to her in many ways.
With the subject of cancer, many authors could shy away but Sophia Bennett has written it in a way that makes the reader understand and appreciate the fact that some people have it very tough.
Personally, I think every teen should read this heart-wrenching novel!
