Review: The Haunting of Tyler May by BJ Mears

By Appraisingpages @appraisjngpages

We received a review request a little while ago, and after I started it I was much too scared to finish! Okay, so I am a bit of a scardy cat, but our friend Jen was immediately interested in checking out the book so I asked her to review it!

I am embarrassed to admit that I am not often one to immediately become engrossed in a book. While I enjoy reading immensely, I often find myself forcing myself into a book further and further until I am finally hooked. However, in the case of “The Haunting of Tyler May” I was pleased that I could enjoy the read from page 1. From the very beginning of Tyler’s story, there were small mysteries that immediately swept both her and I into an interesting and exciting adventure.

Tyler May is a young girl who is thrust into a dangerous journey. After receiving a device that allows her to converse with the dead, see into the past, and a host of other remarkable things, she realizes that her position is one of great danger and responsibility. She works valiantly to make sense of this new and frightening supernatural world in order to save herself, her friends, and countless others from an old, evil, and famed nemesis.

I quite enjoyed having a protagonist that I could relate to on many levels, especially in the midst of a plot that, like many supernatural stories, necessitates a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief. I will admit that there were events, especially those nearing the height of Tyler’s story that I found difficult to accept on account of their bizarre nature. The nemesis, while thoroughly evil on all accounts, was a step back from what I think I was hoping for from the earlier stages of the book. It saddened me a little that, what with such a wonderful supernatural mystery in the beginning, the journey brought us finally to a point where we once again were dealing with antagonists that were either humans or basically humans with very human motivations and methods of attack.

Those things aside, however, I will say that I quite enjoyed the read. I like supernatural stories that surprise me with their creativity, and this one definitely fits the bill! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the supernatural (especially with reference to the dead), likes mystery, and is up for a unique read!
