An endearing story set in historical Baltimore. A young American nation attmepts to fight for its freedom from the British. Rose is a young caring woman who suffers from horrible memories and the loss of both her mother and father. In contrast, Alex is a British officer yearning to earn the love and respect of a family, that doesn't accept him. He must decide whether honor in the British navy or love is the most important goal in his life. Both Alex and Rose question whether there is a God and whether God has abandoned them.
I enjoyed this story. It was simple, easy to follow, and had a good message. The pacing was slower than I would have liked but it meant the romance between Alex and Rose was very well-developed. It also had a Romeo & Juliet type feel to it. All in all, a nice easy read for all ages.
