Review: Josie Maran Argan Creamy Concealer

By Savvybrown @savvybrownblog

I’ve been looking for a new concealer for awhile now and I was really happy to find one that didn’t make me look like I’d just wiped chalk under my eyes. Josie Maran’s line is touted as “Eco-friendly” and “non-toxic”, so when I saw that she’s included darker shades for women of color, I decided to investigate.

JOSIE MARAN Argan Creamy Concealer Crayon – Dark1 ($20.00)

Ingredients: Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Octyldodecanol, Squalane, Polyethylene, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Titanium Dioxide, Synthetic Beeswax, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Stearalkonium Bentonite, Silica, Proplyene Carbonate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil*, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-DI-t-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Polygonum Fagopyrum Seed Extract**, Crithmum Maritimum Extract**. May Contain: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Ultramarines (CI 77007). *Organic **Natural.

I really like how creamy this concealer goes on. It covers my dark spots well and blends easily. The argan oil (it’s a key ingredient in the whole line) seems to make it creamy and smooth. I’m also a fan of the “crayon” packaging. (I love this about my Tarte lipstick too!) It stayed in place for most of the day but I did have to touch it up after work a bit. I think if I wore a finishing powder, then it might have lasted a bit longer.

BUT

I’m not crazy about the Aluminum Hydroxide but I was really surprised to find Ethylhexyl -Methoxycinnamate in this product and it saddens me to see them both in a line of products that claims have a comittment to non-toxic, eco-friendly ingredients. The company does support a variety of good causes and helps to maintain the forests that they get some of their ingredients from, but I still think they can do better.

I will admit, it’s easier to find natural body products than it is to find quality natural makeup. It’s VERY hard to find quality makeup for women with darker tones, in a variety of colors that doesn’t have a lot of “icky” ingredients. Although I will probably finish the tube, unless their ingredients change, I won’t be buying this again.

RATING: 2 Savvy – This product works well and does have a commitment to good social causes and the environment, but the ingredients are not as natural as advertised.

• Have you ever used products from Josie Maran? What did you think?
