Located a mere 15 feet from remains of the Berlin wall, Henne Alt-Berliner Wirtshaus has seen it all, she’s been here for over 100 years serving fried chicken and rye bread to everyone from locals to tourists, including JFK – there’s even a signed photograph of him at the bar!
Henne Alt-Berliner Wirtshaus is within walking distance of Kottbusser Tor U-Bahn station and Moritzplatz and located within a quiet residential area.
We had read a lot about Henne so were eager to get in, it seemed like our luck was out. The beer garden was filled to the brim.Busy beer garden
Luckily there was just one table inside that hadn’t been reserved. If you really want to go, reserve a table and don’t do what we did!
Inside it wasn’t exactly what you expect to find in Berlin – it was like stepping into a Scottish baronial home, creaky leather seats, tartan tablecloths, armoury lining the walls – just a little different and probably hasn’t changed in a long time. As you can see the food menu is very limited. The question is, do you want salad or sausage with your chicken? Some drinks prices…
…and some more…
We ordered some beer (of course), and chicken (of course) with potato salad. We didn’t have too long to wait, what with such a small menu and so many staff.
Unfortunately we only have blurry photos – blame it on the chicken being so good! We tucked in as soon as it arrived. Mrs Foodie isn’t normally a big fan of chicken skin but she devoured it on this occasion. It was crisp like duck skin, not overly fatty and delicious on a piece of rye bread.
The potato salad might not look like much but it was creamy and cooked perfectly so solid enough to scoop onto your plate but soft and melt-in-the-mouth.We had a really enjoyable time at Henne and we understand why it has been here so long – a limited menu which they have perfected and stuck to.
TL;DR
+ Interesting decor for Germany!
+ Tasty chicken
+ Good beer (it’s Germany of course!)
+ beer garden (it’s Germany of course!)
