Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu
When sometime ago, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’s first look was released, I thought I’d never waste my money to watch the oh-so-blank Imran Khan and the trying-hard-to-look-young Kareena on the big screen. But then, being a movie buff I couldn’t really help but rush to the cinemas to watch this romantic comedy. So, did Karan Johar and co really give us a Valentine’s treat?
The plot
Rahul (Imran), the unhappy soul, is a parents abiding richie rich whose dad believes losing the Gold medal matters more than winning the Silver medal. Table manners, neatly tied bow, clean shoes etc matter for his high profile socialite mom. Riana (Kareena), the vivacious hair stylist, bumps into Rahul’s not so happening life. Then, opposites attract as expected.
Actors
Imran was okay. Kareena’s wrinkled face was a put off, but her performance was decent. Boman Irani was brief. Ratna Pathak Shah steals the show in her limited role. Ram Kapoor did his bit.
Analysis
The movie comes as a refreshing change from those cheesy love stories with predictable sequences and Director Shakun Batra has to be applauded for his own non-Bollywood style. Conversations are kept very believable and casual. They were just like how we talk with our friends. The director kept unneeded drama at bay and he stuck to the romantic comedy genre all through. There are many cute and lovable moments, but none seem unnatural. Practical and subtle humor leads the way and the appreciable fact is that you get laughs even without any dialogues.
Characters were etched well. Rahul’s journey from a mom-dad pleasing boy to a fun loving independent man was smartly shown. Riana, who lives on her terms, looked like an extended version of Geet from Jab We Met and most of us can connect with her easy going attitude.
The movie is awesome technically. Especially, I’m way too impressed with the crisp editing, witty and natural dialogues, and the beautiful cinematography. Music was pleasant and peppy. Aunty Ji is a fun number. After Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, this is one movie that is visually pleasing.
On the flip side, screenplay in the first half goes in a slow pace and you’ll have to wait for the story to shape up. Though Imran Khan looked good, when it comes to the performance part, it would have been a true delight if we had Ranbir in his place.
Final Word
A cute rom-com. For those who’d love to watch practically told non-filmy movies, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu will be a treat. Even otherwise, it is good enough to watch once. I’ll go with 3 out of 5.
