Review: Ed’s Easy Diner, Food Court, St Enoch Shopping Centre, Glasgow

The food court at St.Enoch’s has extended and we were possibly transported back to the 1950s with a visit to Ed’s Easy Diner – the chrome, jukeboxes on tables and the red booth seating create a welcoming retro environment.
We grabbed a booth at a busy lunchtime. The Colonel was looking forward to trying this as I had been going on and on about their milkshakes (from a previous visit to their Soho branch a number of years ago).

A quick look at the menu and shakes with malt was ordered. Banana and Peanut Butter £4.75 plus 40p for malt and Butterscotch £4.35 plus 40p for malt.

Both milkshakes were delicious, full of flavour, thick and creamy.  They were a good size however £5 for a shake is helluva steep.

Onto food…

Do you remember childhood burgers?  the ones with onion?  That’s what we tasted here – good burger thickness and fresh toppings but fries not included which is annoying,  You can get an Ed’s plate for £13.05, this includes main, fries, onion rings and coleslaw.  OK if you want all the bits, which we didn’t.

Wet Fries £3.95

Disappointing sized portion for the price.  Frozen Chips and gravy.  hmm.

large 8oz Big Bubba’s Bacon and Cheese £9.75

The Big Bubba’s burger was ordered without salad as The Colonel doesn’t like “rabbit food”.  It arrived perfectly with a side of classic fries (£2.95 so it’s basically an extra £1 to add Bisto-like gravy to make them wet fries).  Thumbs up from The Colonel.  American cheese and good tasty bacon.

£25 worth of food…..

We moved onto dessert ordering a “lot of waffle” – served warm with vanilla ice cream, maple syrup or Hershey choc sauce £4.95 and Pancakes – Ed’s own pancakes served warm with vanilla ice cream and a choice of maple syrup or Hersheys choc sauce £4.95.

Nice pancakes which needed the moisture from the syrup and ice cream.  The waffles were tepid and had that “straight out the bag” feel – as was confirmed when we saw them being loaded into the kitchen later.

All in £40 for lunch for two.  Seriously, was I out of town the day £40 was deemed OK for fast food? The service was friendly but food was a bit slow coming out though the decor and vibe are great as no pressure at all to hurry up and you could have a conversation without getting drowned in music! The shakes are still great but there wasnt that wow factor that I’d expect for thet price.  Our search for Glasgow’s best burger continues…
