All ship-shape at the Cabin
We’ve often pondered The Cabin as it’s got a good reputation and it’s been around forever so it must be doing something Ok.
Armed with a Groupon deal (£14 for two course for two for lunch) we went along to check it out.
Outside there’s an Art Deco feel about the place, I’d love to know how long it’s been like this.
The lunch menu looks good, it took a while to make our choices.
After ordering, a couple of older men came in . Straight away an order was placed for fish & chips with a pot of tea each. I soon regretted my choice seeing how quick they ordered it. I always think you should follow pensioners – it’s usually good and cheap!
Tomato and basil soup
Tomato & basil soup
Homemade and chunky, quite spicy too with warming aftertaste. The dollop of pesto worked a treat.
Brown soda bread was thinly cut but with a good crunch crust.
Prawns with cream cheese
Prawns with cream cheese
Huge portion for a starter. Served atop fresh brown bread were plump prawns covered with a very creamy crème fraîche with salad, fresh tomatoes, garlic and onion. Lovely fresh flavours.
Fish & chips
Fish & chips
Proper thick cut chips, cooked to perfection, fluffy inside and crisp outside. The fish was meaty and fluffy with a crisp batter. Only downside was that the tartare sauce could’ve done with more zing – come on Chefs please sort this out, the vinegar cuts through the fat!
Pea and mushroom risotto
Pea & mushroom risotto
Creamy rice and sauce which well seasoned. Liked the amount of mushroom, tomato, peas. Big portion too, had to get Mr to eat the rest.
Citrus cheesecake
Citrus cheesecake
We decided on sharing dessert as I was stuffed and Mr Foodie can’t resist a cheesecake! It was really creamy with a firm biscuit base and a mango and strawberry coulis. The Mr was happy.
Ending with a coffee, we chilled out to the eclectic music – The Bluebells to The Smiths to Belle and Sebastian.
We we really liked The Cabin which was cosy with homely food. The waitress was friendly and (single) toilet spotless!
Normal price is lunch 2 course £12.95/ 3 course £14.95; pre-theatre 2 course £13.95/ 3 course £17.95.
