With Endgame, Marvel provides an emotionally overwhelming cinematic experience as a closure to its carefully planned universe (built in 11 years) to be celebrated for years to come.
After 11 years, 21 movies (3 of them are the official Avengers movies) and 1 sharing universe, Marvel Cinematic Universe eventually heads to the endgame of its thoroughly built infinity stone arc with Avengers: Endgame. The road has never been easy, although it is indeed glimmering with box office receipts. And yet, what Kevin Feige has been doing with Marvel properties for the last decade (including the fighting to acquire back some characters co-owned with other studios) is, possibly, the eighth wonder-a cinematic breakthrough that nobody had never dared to imagine before. Endgame is set to be 22nd movie and, especially, a grand 3-hour event of closure to this over-than-a-decade long journey.
Picking up where the devastating Infinity War left out, Endgame makes sure that for the first time the titular heroes assembly finally lives up to its name as a literal avengers. 'Avenging the fallen,' that's how the promotional tagline always exclaims. Infinity War sees the post-Civil War Avengers members (including the post- Planet Hulk survivors) joining forces with Wakandan armies led by Black Panther, the space band of misfits called Guardians of the Galaxy and, for the first time, Doctor Strange to finally confront the big, bad arch-villain, Thanos. While fluidly incorporating humor and action set-pieces to set-up the grand assemble, the movie caught everybody off-guard with the cliffhanger, which gave us no option but waiting for a whole year for the then-untitled fourth Avengers movie.
Instead of functioning as a direct sequel, Endgame opts to become a standalone story continuing the timeline by seeing the event in Infinity War as a backstory, instead of a gap to mend. The first act deals with how the characters such as Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffallo) and other Infinity War survivor along with the newly introduced Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) cope up with the aftermath of Thanos' showdown. Some of the M.I.A. characters are also returning; that also includes Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) whose sophomore movie came after the last Avengers tenure before this and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). No spoiler here, but somehow, they managed to find a way to do their avenger job here, which basically becomes the motor of Endgame.
The second act serves as the most important plot-point in Endgame as well as a tribute to an 11 year of planning. Those who follows the universe from its early conception will find this act as a reminder of the universe' most pivotal events to date as well as a re-exclamation that the whole MCU is built upon hearts. Cameos, call backs, revisits and re-purposing will surely entice fans with charms and, somehow, leads us to see the whole universe in a new light. Explanations about how the second act operates might possibly cause hiccups, plot-wise; but, that doesn't make Endgame less effective in providing a hearty closure.
Once again, no spoilers here; but, Endgame's third act is definitely everything Marvel fans dream of. It's full of action sequences that you might have never imagined before. Watch this with perfect crowds then you'll have a room full of cheers, applause, laughs and tears at the same time. Even there, Endgame does not stop to astonish. Russo Brothers stills save up top-notch spectacles for the final hours. Even after that, the story continues with more riveting moments and layered endings.
