Jeremy Carver, the new co-showrunner, made no secret of his desire to get the show back to its roots this season, taking the best parts of earlier seasons and mixing them together to restore some of that classic “Supernatural” feel. This episode feels like a mission statement, as we see the episodic case taking a bit of a back seat to the tension between Sam and Dean.
