Reunion Bar and Kitchen, Mahim: Reunited with Taste!

When a restaurant makes you want to change your residence, that’s when you realize you are totally sold on the place. Reunion Bar & Kitchen is a small joint with a big heart. Tucked away in a corner on a busy Mahim junction, the exteriors and surroundings belie its aspiration. With a dance floor, DJ playing old 80s – 90s and early 2000 songs, karaoke and a smattering of Hindi songs on demand, it is your usual “let’s meet friends over drinks” joint. What really makes you start noticing, is the thought that has gone into the finger foods and the quality that it upholds.

We started with the cocktails – Hangman’s Blood; Gin, Whisky, Rum, Brandy, Beer with a splash of Wine, and Pink Motorcycle; Gin, White Rum, Tequila, Vodka, Triple Sec, Grenadine, 7 Up and Cherry. While the Hangman’s Blood can give a shot in the arm to any depressed spirit, the Pink Motorcycle was a surprising alcoholic treat that kick started the evening like a revved up Hayabusa! With that hotchpotch of liquors, one would expect that taste would suffer, but they were both delectable! The next round of cocktails were Sling On Your Arm; Gin and Cherry Brandy topped with Soda, and Deep Blue Sea; Bacardi, Blue Curacao, Pineapple juice, Sweet and Sour Mix and Vanilla Icecream. While the first was average, the latter was a wonderful dessert cocktail.

Like I said earlier, a lot of thought has gone into tying our Indian urge for street food with the clubbing experience. For finger foods, we had Sangli chi Vada Pav; mini vada pav that are a burst of flavor on your tongue. The Cornflakes ki Bhel was a treat for the diet conscious who wants to indulge. All the tangy sweet spicy flavours were there. The next in line were Mini Peta Pockets with Spinach and Mushroom and Drunken Chicken. The Peta was soft and the filling was full of flavor. The drunken chicken was a fusion of Indian spices and Chinese sauces and made a delightful morsel. The Mutton Seekh Frankie was beautifully moist and flavourful meat rolled in flaky pastry rolls. The Kalimirch Jhinga was truly fresh, lightly flavoured with pepper and parsley. The Kekda Pattice; crab cakes with Indian spices was enjoyable. The best part was that the spices did not overpower the delicate taste and the crabmeat was the star of the dish.

Reunion is not only about finger foods and they have some interesting dishes for the hearty eaters or the ones who want to have something substantial. We tried the house specialties on recommendation, Dal Pakwan and the Butter Chicken Khichdi. The Dal Pakwan was authenticity at its best while the khichdi was a comfort food innovation. I would recommend the latter to anyone who wants to feel the warmth of comfort food. I wonder why no one has ever thought of it as it is such a natural combination.

I am a huge dessert fan but was so stuffed that we gave the desserts a miss.

There were so many dishes on the menu I wanted to try and also eat again the ones I  had tried already that I had to  promise my glutton heart that we shall come again before  making an exit that evening.
