Republic P-47D Thunderbolt

@ Colorado Springs Airport, CO

September 2017

Taken during the 2017 Pike’s Peak Regional Airshow, this Thunderbolt is part of the collection of the Tennessee Museum of Aviation. With an empty weight of 10,000 lbs, the P-47 was the heaviest single engine fighter of WWII. The aircraft utilized a broad cowling using a “horse collar”-shaped ellipse. This cowling admitted cooling air for the engine, left and right oil coolers, and the turbo-supercharger intercooler intake under the engine. This aircraft is one of only two P-47D’s which have a functioning turbo-supercharger installed. The original “Hun Hunter XVI” was that of LT. Col. Gil Wymond of the 57th Fighter Group. His first Hun Hunter was a P-40F Warhawk, and by the end of the war, Wymond was flying his 16th aircraft named “Hun Hunter”, a P-47D that inspired the livery of this three year restoration.
