  • A new report claims Samsung could bring the S-Pen to the S30 Ultra.
  • Samsung could also position the Galaxy Z Fold series as a later successor to the Note series.

The S-Pen has been an integral part of the Samsung Galaxy Note series from the start and dates back to 2011. We've seen it on every Note flagship since then, but never on the main-line Galaxy S series.

Well, Korean outlet The Elec reports that the top-end Galaxy S30 phone (supposedly the Galaxy S30 Ultra) will come with an S-Pen. Additionally, the website reports that the three S30-series phones are code-named M1, N2, and O3 (the latter is the top-end model).

The Korean publication claims that a launch of the Galaxy Note 30 has not been confirmed for the second half of 2021 either. However, Samsung could plan to launch a Galaxy Z Fold 3 with an S-Pen during this period.

Foldable parts to replace the Galaxy Note series?

Actually, The Elec According to the statement, the biggest factor in the Galaxy Note series launch in 2021 will be the Galaxy Z Fold series sales performance. It is said that Galaxy Note phones typically sell 10 million units from their launch to the end of the year, and Galaxy Z Fold sales have not yet reached that mark. The outlet also says that ultra-thin glass (UTG) manufacturing is also a factor that could hinder foldable sales at the Note series level.

We've heard murmurs before that Samsung is considering adding an S-Pen to the Galaxy Z Fold series, but this could be the first big rumor we hear about the S-Pen being used on a Galaxy S Series is coming. In both cases, this report suggests (if applicable) that the Korean manufacturer is planning to adopt the Galaxy Z Fold series by the Galaxy Note range, while the Galaxy S Ultra is essentially transforming into a more conventional Note device.

However, getting an S-Pen with foldable phone screens working is still a major technical challenge. Sure, Samsung's latest leaflets have UTG for extra durability, but the company used some sort of protective plastic layer on the glass layer that is still scratch-sensitive. So we'd imagine that any future Z-fold with an S-Pen would require a tougher protective layer, or UTG, on the surface itself.
