Parliamentarian Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe submitted a proposal to the Speaker to repeal the 20th Amendment to the Constitution and re-enact parts of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution as the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.
He said that he had submitted the proposal on behalf of the 41 MPs who are acting independently in Parliament.Meanwhile, the Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena stated that the groups also presented the draft constitutional changes to the Speaker at the party leaders’ meeting held at the Parliament complex.
He said copies would be given to other party leaders today. He also said that the essence of the draft amendments was also presented by the party leaders at the party leadership meeting.
He said that he would continue to discuss with the party leaders the drafts to be presented to the Speaker through the Party Leaders’ Meeting.
He also stated that the SJB had presented a proposal to parliament as a private members bill on April 21.
He also stated that a Constitutional Committee appointed by the President has been functioning for the past one and a half years.
“The party leaders were present at the discussion convened by the Speaker and the party leaders presented their draft amendments to the Constitution to the Speaker. Tomorrow, we hope to give copies to all party leaders. We do not yet know the full amendments and their contents.”
Meanwhile, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed Parliament that steps would be taken to forward all the Constitutional proposals he had received to the Attorney General.
