Remove Password From PDF Files

Posted on the 14 July 2013 by Jyoti Arora @Jy0tiAr0ra

‘Necessity is a mother of invention,’ it once was said. These days, for common people like me at least, necessity more often than not means a Google Search. And Google till now has never disappointed me in finding solutions, answers, products and services that I happen to be in need of.

But this post is not about Google, of course. This post is about a little utility that I felt in need of today. I needed to remove password protection from a PDF document. I knew the password of course, but I needed to mail the document to someone and I was quite sure the receiver was not going to like the hassle of password protection.

So, of course, I Googled, and found this website. The website serves only one function, and that is to remove password protection and encryption from PDF files.

The website is called www.PDFUnlock.com. It provides a simple online tool to remove password protection from PDF files. All you need to do is upload the file on this website. The documents can be uploaded from the computer, Dropbox and Google Drive. Then just click on the Unlock button, put in the password of the file when asked and press Unlock again. Done. The file, with the password protection removed, will be downloaded on the computer. No other download or install is required to run the utility.

However, I don’t really know how secure the website is. Its WOT rating seems to be okay. But still, you may think better to be cautious when using it to remove passwords from sensitive or confidential documents. Also, you must have the document’s password, otherwise I don’t suppose the website can unlock it.

The website also has an app for Google Chrome. Just click on the Install button that shows the Chrome icon and it will take you to the app’s page on Google Chrome Store. The app though seems to work as nothing but the shortcut to the website.

And if you have lost the password, here’s one other tool that might come in handy. I haven’t tried it personally, but the reviews on download.com are mostly positive. The description of this little program explains that it tries various ways to open up a PDF file whose password has been lost. It requires a download, however. You can get it from here.

If you try it, do let me know how it works.
