As we celebrate today with parades and picnics let us not forget, today is not about the barbeques or even the parades.  It’s not about the day off from work and school or even the unofficial kick off to summer.  Today is a day to remember our veterans who died fighting for our country.  They have served our country proudly protecting all of the freedoms which we often take for granted.  All so today would be possible for us all.  So that we can enjoy picnics with our family and watch parades.

Here’s a way you can honor a fallen soldier today.  Wear a red poppy.  In 1915 Moina Michael wrote this poem:

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

And that’s how the wearing of the red poppy began.  It’s not something we really do anymore, but perhaps it’s time we get back to our roots and truly understand the meaning of today and teach our children what it’s all about.  Most of us know of someone who has died fighting for our country and we should stop and say a little prayer for all of them.

So while you’re enjoying your cookout and parades and time with family display some poppies proudly and remind everyone that today we signal to the skies that blood of heroes never dies.  At 3 p.m. local time across the nation lets pause as a nation for a moment of silence or listen to Taps.

Who are you remembering this Memorial Day?
