Reference Resource Mondays: Sure Is Cold Out There

Boy, I remember the days that it snowed in school, and I’d be so excited because more often than not, I’d be able to stay inside the house. It was a nice reminder that yeah, I had it made.

Now? Not so much, as work requires I go out and freeze to death or something. Yes, being overly dramatic, but ultimately I now know how my mom and dad felt when they had to go out in the snow (or in the cold) and get to work. Even if like 70% of their co-workers wouldn’t make it.

But ok, enough about me and the cold. Let’s get to this week’s Reference Resource Mondays.

“Funimation undercuts Crunchyroll with new Subpass” by Heartless

Hmm, a definite amount of talk has surfaced around Funimation over the Winter Season, and I’m working on a post involving them that will briefly mention their activity this Winter, but, to me, Funimation is finally making a much needed step in the streaming game that has been woefully lacking for the past few years. Let’s face it: their website has been horrible, the selections had been meager, and the biggest thing is that this service is for North American people only. This actually wouldn’t — maybe shouldn’t — be a problem if the rest of the world could feed their own country an anime service, but anime is just not popular enough to generate enough cash for this to happen. So, for Funimation, this has been a big problem.

I think it’s still too early to make any proclamations on whether Funimation is getting serious with the streaming game. The Winter season coming in would be light on content, so it may not be a big surprise Funimation’s getting titles. (The big surprise is the titles simulcasted.). There still is an issue with them unable to get titles up on the site as fast as their competitors, for who knows what reasons except they’re probably a lot, and we’ll have to see if they can handle the weekly load that comes with simulcasting shows.

And then of course they’ll be doing that broadcast dub thing, but it’s not that big a deal for this.

Whatever the case, it’s nice Funimation’s stepping up and catering to the people, but they certainly have a ways to go before they win over those who have been consistently turned off by the service.
