Reddit Ireland made the "difficult decision" to close early in the morning, to limit the racist and extremist content published by the United States during the daytime.
A fault of a multitude of accounts that used false identities.
Moderators say that having to check every comment on social networking forums pushed them to the "breaking point".
The page is now looking to expand its team of moderators and add filters that can detect "hateful" comments on posts.
In a post on the page, which has 280,000 members, it reads: "Today we make the very difficult decision to temporarily close Reddit Ireland between midnight and 08:00 every day to stem the flow of racist / extremist content that is published in these moments ".
"White supremacy"
"The vast majority of hateful comments made in the past have been directed solely at someone's skin color," said Reddit Ireland.
But the filters it would install would also identify "common phrases used against the travel community and any other minority group."
Ellen Pao, former Reddit CEO, said the platform "feeds and monetizes white supremacy and hates all day long".
And co-founder Alexis Ohanian recently resigned from his board of directors, urging the company to replace him with a black candidate.
