Reddit’s Collectible Avatars project is a great example of a successful Web3 on-ramp. Over the past few months, the discussion site has given away millions of free NFTs to users. And thanks to a new deal with the NFL to give away free NFTs during the Super Bowl, Reddit is about to reach another important milestone.
Since Monday, when the official Super Bowl LVII NFT avatars were made available, about 1.3 million have been made. More than 500,000 were made on Tuesday alone. According to public blockchain statistics on Dune, Reddit users have made about 10 million Collectible Avatar NFTs so far, and the current number is over 9.7 million.
Reddit users can get one of four unique avatar styles for the Super Bowl for free, including ones for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. Collectible Avatars for Reddit are made on Polygon, which is a sidechain network for Ethereum that makes transactions cheaper and faster.

Because they are free, Reddit’s Super Bowl NFTs aren’t affecting any trading activity. On the largest NFT market, OpenSea, prices on the secondary market start at just 0.18 MATIC ($0.23), and the NFL collection has only been traded for about 5 ETH ($7,600) since the site started.
For many Web3 fans, the most appealing thing about Reddit’s NFT program is that it makes it easy for people to join the space. Reddit users can make a wallet by clicking a button, picking an avatar from a list, and setting a password for their new wallet. If you want, you can move the avatars to an external wallet and trade or sell them from there.
Dune data shows that Reddit’s Polygon avatars are in more than 6.6 million unique wallets, including about 500,000 wallets made this week because of the Super Bowl promotion.
