Reagan Outdoor Announces “Austin Art Boards” Winners

By Thehangline

Back in June, we wrote about the Austin Art Boards contest call for entries. And now Reagan is back to announce the winners. There are a few of things that make this project unique amongst other similar “art on billboards” campaigns. First, some of the pieces look tightly cropped so that we’re not seeing the entire work. Second, some appear to have been reformatted specifically for the medium. And finally, most aren’t you’re typical “pretty landscape” type of art.

“Cowboy” by Will Russell is my gut favorite. Mostly for it’s tight crop on the cowboy’s face, but also because as you drive nearer, you’ll start to see details of brushstrokes.

“Fluid Intelligence” by Jack King will be another interesting outdoor distance experiment. From a distance, you see the pattern of what you might think is a quilt, but details of visual playfulness start to reveal themselves as you drive closer.

Tell us your favorite in the comments. Be sure to head over to austinartboards.org and click through each one to see videos of the artists discussing their work and the importance of the entire project.
