Ravindu Fernando (63 n.o.) and Kavindu Pathiratne (24) put on a fighting 72-run stand as Tamil Union scored 201 for 7 wickets at close of the first day’s play in their Major Club Emerging 3-day cricket tournament final against Sebastianites played at SSC grounds yesterday. The rain stopped play with 30 overs unbowled in day one.

Tamil Union were put into the bat first and their openers Supun Kavinda (24) and Navod Paranavithana (10) added a 40-run stand. However, ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Ratnayake made an early breakthrough to get three early wickets and Tamil Union were 57 for 4 wickets after 23 overs.

Ravindu Fernando, the 22-year-old right-hander came to the middle at number six, made a good batting display (63 n.o in 95 balls with 4 fours and six) to build up their innings. He added 72 runs for the seventh wicket supported Kavindu Pathiratne who scored 24 in 65 balls with 3 fours. Further, he put on a 31-run unbroken eighth-wicket stand with Raveen de Silva who scored 21 in 20 balls with 2 fours and a six.

Tharindu Fernando finished with 3 for 91 in 30 overs well supported by Manelka de Silva and Sandun Fernando taking two wickets each.
