Rating Players' Offensive and Defensive Impact on Puck-possession

 Habs preseason
Among many of the metrics I've created are 3 separate metrics used to quantify each player's offensive and defensive impact on puck possession. These are not meant to show one player as being better than the other, as there is more to preventing scoring-chances and producing offense than simple possession. That said, these metrics are useful in providing glimpses into how involved a player is in the play, as well as how successful they are in removing possession from the opposition, while also maintaining possession for his own team.
It's important to note that the seven preseason games used to produce this data is a substantially smaller sample size than normally required. As such, it is only a reflection of each player's performance during this preseason.
ES RATING RELATIVE TO REPLACEMENT
Rating is a metric that quantifies how many more successful plays a player contributes than failed plays per-minute of ice-time; and can also be broken down by zone. The more often a player is in the play, and the more positive plays he produces, the higher the rating produced. The calculation is done simply by subtracting the number of failed events a player contributes per-minute of ice-time from the number of successful events he contributes.
This graph communicates each player's rating by comparing it to an average player who plays the same position. The average is calculated using the numbers from all players who play each position. The higher he is above replacement value, the further his rating will be to the right of the graph; the lower the rating, the further to the left it will appear.
Through the 2014 preseason, Michael Bournival, Jiri Sekac, and P.A Parenteau have produced the top ES ratings among Habs wingers. Among centres, Lars Eller produced the top rating relative to a replacement, while the top ratings among defensemen were produced by PK Subban and Tom Gilbert.

ES RATIO RELATIVE TO REPLACEMENT
Ratio is a metric that quantifies how many successful plays a player produces for every 1 failed play; and can also be broken down by zone.  The calculation is done simply by dividing the number of successful events a player contributes by the number of failed events he contributes. Ice-time is not taken into consideration by this metric.
This graph communicates each player's ratio by comparing it to an average player who plays the same position. The average is calculated using the numbers from all players who play each position. The higher he is above replacement value, the further his rating will be to the right of the graph; the lower the ratio, the further to the left it will appear.

ES POSSESSION RATING RELATIVE TO REPLACEMENT
Possession rating is a metric that quantifies how many more successful possession plays a player produces per-minute played than failed plays; and can also be broken down by zone.  Unlike even-strength rating, possession rating uses only those plays that a player makes while either team is in possession of the puck. In other words, it does not use loose-puck recoveries. The calculation is done simply by subtracting the number of failed possession events a player contributes per-minute of ice-time from the number of successful possession events.
