Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 With New Form Factor Announced For $25

Surprisingly, the Raspberry Pi Foundation announced a new addition to its family of single-board computers - Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4. It is a simmered variant of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with a new form factor. The compute module 4 is intended for users who want a compact format or integrated eMMC storage.

It's based on the same 64-bit BCM2711 quad-core application processor as the Raspberry Pi 4, but offers faster processor cores, better media and interface capabilities. With Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, the Pi Foundation has, for the first time, introduced different RAM options for users to choose from, as well as wireless connectivity options.

Specifications of the Raspberry Pi 4 compute module

Here are the specs for the latest offering from the Raspberry Pi foundation:

  • 1.5GHz quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 processor
  • VideoCore VI graphics, supporting OpenGL ES 3.x
  • 4K60 hardware decoding of H.265 video (HEVC)
  • Two HDMI interfaces, at resolutions up to 4K
  • Single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface
  • Dual MIPI DSI display and two MIPI CSI-2 camera interfaces
  • 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz IEEE 802.11b / g / n / ac wireless LAN and optional Bluetooth 5.0
  • Gigabit Ethernet PHY with IEEE 1588 support
  • 28 GPIO pins, with up to 6 × UART, 6 × I2C and 5 × SPI

Compute Module 4 is available in different RAM options including 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB or 8 GB of LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM. In addition, you also have the option to choose between 8GB, 16GB or 32GB eMMC Flash storage.

Raspberry Pi 4 compute module: new form factor

This time, the Raspberry Pi Foundation introduced an even smaller and more compact form factor with Compute Module 4. Its size is 55mm × 40mm (2.16 × 1.57in), which makes it smaller than its predecessors.

The official blogpost for the SBC read, " Calculation module 4 introduces a completely new form factor and a break in compatibility with the previous calculation modules. Where previous modules adopted the JEDEC DDR2 SODIMM mechanical standard, with I / O signals on an edge connector, we now bring I / O signals to two high density perpendicular connectors (one for the interfaces of power and low speed, and one for speed interfaces). "

Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 launched at $ 25 for the 1GB variant with no wireless connectivity option.
