Last night’s episode was the beginning of the end for True Blood’s final season with many story lines settled including Tara’s and Violet’s. Yet, there is still more for us to learn in the last two installments of the season, such as:
- whether Eric will become a celebrity endorsing the “New Blood” drink or, if he will fall out with Mr. Gus.
- Who will end up together in the foursome of Jason, Hoyt, Jessica and Bridget? At the end of this episode it looks like Hoyt and Jessica might be gearing up to be a couple again and we know that Jason is very smitten with Bridget, so, these couplings must be resolved before the end.
- And, what will be Sarah Newlin’s fate? Will she be held a prisoner her entire life or will she die or will she escape?
- Where is the romance between Arlene and Keith going?
- And, of course, what will happen to Bill Compton who has refused Sarah’s cure? will he live or die?
However, this post is about episode 7.08, “Almost Home” so below are my random thoughts about what happened in this episode:
ERIC IS CURED AND HE AND PAM TEAM UP WITH MR. GUS
Even before the credits roll, we see Eric cured of his Hep-V. As he, Pam and Mr. Gus arrive at the Fellowship of the Sun camp they are surprised when Sarah Newlin turns herself in to them. Eric rushes to her, but Pam threatens to kill herself if he kills Sarah saying, “If you die, I die.” Eric then decides that he will at least take a bite out of Sarah and as he does. Once he tastes her, he starts to chuckle and then we see the veins in his arm and chest begin to disappear. He is then, elated and happy to have been cured. The group takes Sarah into custody and put her in the basement of Fangtasia.
Later, Eric takes a side trip to Bill’s house to find Sookie and when he does she immediately notices that the veins on Eric are gone. She is happy for him, but immediately tells him that Bill is now infected with the disease and his strain is developing much quicker than normal. Since he has found a cure, she begs him to help her. Because Eric has promised Mr. Gus to tell no one about the cure, he hesitates asking Sookie to let him think. Finally he disappears saying he will come back that night, even though Sookie tells him that Bill might not have that kind of time.
Eric and Pam talk with Mr. Gus and when Pam asks what’s taking so long to get the “new blood” on the market, he tells them that it takes time to synthesize. He further relates that they don’t want a cure, but prefer to find instead something that will need to be taken over and over and then, they’ll make lots of money.
Sookie is impatient so she leaves Bill’s house and drives to Fangtasia to see Eric. When Mr. Gus’ men find her they bring her in and before they can do anything Eric offers to glamour her instead. While Eric is pretending to glamour Sookie (since she can’t be glamoured) Sookie hear’s Mr. Gus’ plans and that Sarah Newlin is in the basement. She leaves having fooled Mr. Gus that Eric had glamoured her. While driving home, she thinks about the back entrance to the dungeon basement and turns the truck around. She enters the basement and finds Sarah. She almost releases her, but decides against it. She will go back home and bring Bill to her instead.
TARA AND LETTIE MAE FIND CLOSURE
Lettie Mae and Lafayette are busy digging up the front yard of Tara’s childhood home when Reverend Daniels arrives. He tries to convince Lettie Mae to stop, but Lafayette and she convince him that this isn’t about getting high, but about giving Tara peace. James arrives and feeds blood to both Lettie Mae and Lafayette and they start walking toward Tara. The Reverend gives in and also drinks James blood joining them. They do indeed find Tara and a flashback to Tara’s childhood begins showing how Lettie Mae got to be a drunkard and that Tara has real guilt about it. Her father was quite abusive and we see him enter the home while Lettie Mae is attempting to give Tara a birthday party. Sookie and Lafayette are there, too. The husband ruins the party, the children leave and he goes crazy looking for his gun, presumably to shoot his wife. Because he can’t find it, he proceeds to hurt her and finally leaves driving away. Before he leaves, Tara runs into the bedroom finds the pistol and is about to shoot her daddy, but stops, afraid to do it and runs into the front yard and buries the gun.
Once this scene is over, Tara asks her mother’s forgiveness and says that she is sorry that she didn’t shoot him when she could. Lettie Mae doesn’t blame her and since Tara is no longer riddled with guilt anymore she is now free to seek her eternal rest and disappears in a cloud.
VIOLET’S EVIL IS ENDED BY OF ALL PEOPLE, HOYT
Early in the episode, Hoyt is a real jerk to Bridget and she gets her very angry. Just as she and Hoyt are arguing, Jason gets two texts from Violet with photos of Adilyn and Jessica tied up. He knows he has to go rescue them and gets up to leave. Bridget, being so angry, stops him saying she wants to come, too. Jason refuses her, but she still gets into the car and goes with him. Jason calls Andy, but he and Holly are still far away and won’t get there in time, but they are on their way. So, it’s all up to Jason.
When he arrives at Violet’s house, he leaves Bridget in the car with a gun to protect her and enters the home. Soon after he enters, Violet captures him and takes him into her sex dungeon where Adilyn, Wade and Jessica are tied up awaiting Violet’s torture. Now, Jason is just one more victim to be added to Violet’s torture mix. Violet goes into great detail about what’s in store for the quartet by illustrating each of her medieval torture devices. Just as she is in her full glory and about to begin the actual torturous acts, Hoyt shows up and shoots her, point blank, and she explodes into a pool of blood dead.
All are safe now and Andy and Holly soon show up thanking Hoyt for his assistance. Jason drives Jessica home and they have a very touching scene together outside Bill’s house where they discuss being great friends.
Hoyt still doesn’t remember Jessica, but when she thanks him, he seems oddly interested in her. Later at Merlotte’s he is having breakfast with Jason and he seems intrigued by Jessica even though, at this point, he’s still with Bridget. However, later on, Hoyt arrives at the Compton house with a very sweet gift for Bill. He has had his blood drawn since he has a negative blood type and he knows Bill favors it. He and Jessica have a very nice scene together and there is obvious attraction between the two. Hoyt doesn’t really understand it, but we know that he’s still in love with her, even though he can’t remember.
Since Jason seemed immediately attracted to Bridget when he first saw her in the last episode and Hoyt seems drawn to Jessica, I feel that Jason will hook up with Bridget and Hoyt with Jess.
BILL’S ILLNESS CONTINUES
The biggest plot line that is still completely unresolved is Bill’s. He is still suffering from Hep-V and it’s getting worse.
At the beginning of the episode, Sookie asked Bill what it was that made Sophie Anne ask him to come to Bon Temps and find her.
Bill responded that his instructions were to meet her, determine if you were fae and bring her back to Sophie Ann so she could breed her. Then, she asks him why he didn’t bring her to Sophie Ann. He replies that “from the very first moment that we met, you reminded me what it felt like to have my human heart; the problem was, it was only a memory. All I had was darkness to give you in return.”
Sookie replies,
No, that’s not true, there was love there that I never felt before; I didn’t even know it was possible. I couldn’t have felt that if you only had darkness.
Bill replies,
But it was there. I couldn’t escape my past no matter how much you made me want to; you made me believe that i could. I thought that if I could protect you it would erase some of the things I’d seen and done. I was such a fool.
That may be why Bill had this foreshadowing dream that they had a baby and it was nothing but darkness.
That night Sookie brings Bill to the Fangtasia basement so that he can be cured. Just when he is ready to feed on her, he hesitates and then says, “I don’t want the blood.” and the episode ends.
What? Why would Bill refuse the blood? It must be that he doesn’t feel he deserves to live and that he thinks he will do the best for Sookie by dying and letting her get on with her own life.
