TRUE BLOOD IS BACK!!!

In my opinion, this is the best episode of the season so far, and if the subsequent episodes are as good, True Blood will go out with a season to be proud of.

The first three episodes were a bit confusing and not as interesting as tonight’s installment, but perhaps that was needed to bring it all together so this episode could stand out. At any rate, below are my random thoughts on this episode.

Ginger, the brains behind Fangtasia

For all of the 6+ years that True Blood has been on, I’ve always loved seeing any of the scenes that our screaming Ginger was in. She has always been full of fun and her screaming, although ear piercing, was so funny. I so enjoyed learning about Ginger’s past and her adventure from an astute college girl to the crazy glamoured vamp tramp. It’s almost a shame that she had to change so and I’m sort of angry with Eric, but especially Pam for making her be so, but Ginger is just such a gem of a character that I can’t blame them too much. However, when we learned that it was Ginger that thought up the idea of changing the video store into a vampire bar/nightclub, I, just like Pam thought it was a stoke of genius. Too bad that Ginger doesn’t even know now that it was her idea. Pam is so wicked for taking the credit, but somehow I loved that she did. Tara Buck is just absolutely amazing in the part of Ginger. She was more than convincing playing the intelligent college woman with great ideas, however she is even better as the somewhat brain dead Ginger who adores Pam and, especially Eric. It was just a scream when Eric walked in the first time she met him; the look on her face was just priceless. I had a big laugh at that scene.

Eric and Pam

Even though Eric is afflicted with the dreaded “Hep V” virus, somehow I don’t think he is going to die from the disease. I somehow think that he will be one of the first to be cured, however, that’s purely speculation on my part. If he does die during the season, I doubt it will be because of the HepV, instead, I think he will die in battle or have some other sort of glorious death. If not, I hope that he, Pam and Ginger can continue on with their productive enterprise until that happens (if it does) and Pam and Eric can co-exist together. I liked how Pam told Ginger that she and Eric have been on and off lovers. Personally, I think it’s mostly “off” these days, even if Pam might like it to be “on.” They both clearly love each other deeply, but it’s more of a respect for each other; like they are joined somehow and their companionship is the most important thing; not sex. I love them together and love it when Pam shows her undying devotion to her maker.

Sookie and her quest to save Bon Temps and the prisoners in the Fangtasia dungeon

Sookie decides that she has to get the girls who are still prisoners out of wherever they are and she is sure she can get it out of Holly. Having escaped last episode, Holly is still glamoured and can’t remember a thing that went on. Sookie entersHolly’s thoughts and gets her to remember where she was held and what happened to her. So, with that information, the plan is set to wait until nightfall to have the healthy vampires fight the Hep v vamps and rescue, Arlene, Nicole and Jane Bodehouse. Sam has a few moments of not wanting to wait until nightfall, but with the aid of his gun, Jason convinces him that they have to wait.

In the meantime, Jessica is still sick and her bullet wound from when Maxine shot her isn’t healing. James tells Bill about it and Bill insists that she must feed. Sookie arrives and convinces Jessica to take Lafayette’s blood and asks James to call him. In a very touching scene, Lafayette lets Jessica to feed on him and once she gives in, she is healed and ready to help save the humans. Sookie also offers her blood to Bill and he drinks.

Once night falls, they have only managed to recruit two other vampires to help them besides Bill and James. The to vampires are Michael and Kieth, who is a drummer in James’ band. Jason decides that this is the group and says, “this is our Normandy.” After Bill explains to Jason that we suffered over 2,000 casualties at the beaches of Normandy suggesting that isn’t a good idea.  Jason replies, “History is a bitch,” and gives up that plan.  Just then, there’s a knock at the door and it’s Eric and Pam. Sookie runs to Eric, which was somewhat of a surprise because last year she had rescinded his invitation. However, it was a touching moment and Eric is convinced that he and Pam should join the group. He also calls Willa who is not too happy to be beckoned by her maker in such a way, but he insists and she has no choice but to join.

The team is set and they all set off to save the captives.

Sam turns into a rat (which I loved seeing) and sneaks into Fangtasia’s basement via the secret Civil War tunnel to alert the ladies not to scream when the vampires come to help them. Bill and Pam are the ones elected to go in first, but as soon as they come they see that Arlene’s been taken upstairs by the HepV vamps and as they go upstairs the towns folk, including Kenya, Rosie, Vince and others storm in the firebomb. This stops Bill and the others from getting to Arlene, so that team turns around and instead heads back out the tunnel while the infected head for the door. The town fold did help out a little in that they shot a bunch of the infected vampires trying to get out the door. But one of the Hep V vampires makes it through and kills Kenya and more. We then see Rosie cowering on the other side of the van and the next we see her Eric is feeding on her body.

Then, infected vampires square off against the healthy vampires minus Bill and Eric who are still inside Fangtasia. Bill stakes the vampire who is about to kill Eric and we then see Pam put out the fire and take out another town person with another fire bomb. Bill attempts to feed Arlene but instead feels Jessica is in trouble and leaves to save her by killing Vince who is attempting to stake her. So, instead vampire Keith saves Arlene and he looks like he’s a bit enamored when doing so.

It was a lot of action that was beautifully shot, in my opinion and I applaud Gregg Fienberg for an excellent job of directing.

Old faces, old loves and remembering more deaths

Terry Bellefleur

Arlene is almost at death when she sees a vision of now dead husband, Terry calling her. They converse while Sookie tries to convince Arlene to hold on until one of the healthy vamps can feed her blood. Arlene seems ready to go with Terry until she receives the blood then, she and Terry realize that she has to stay among the living.

rt704-6

Hoyt Fortenberry

Jason is assigned the sad task of telling Hoyt that his mother has died. Since Jessica glamoured all remembrance of Jason from Hoyt’s memory before he left for Alaska, Jason has to act official, but when he hears Hoyt break down in tears over his mother’s death, he transitions back into his best friend and calls him Bubba. When Hoyt notices and asks if he knows him, he says, “No,” and reverts back to his official status. He tells Hoyt that someone will pick him up when he arrives. This suggests that we will see Jim Parrack back in a future episode and we hope that he and Jessica have a lovely scene together.

rt704-19

Jackson Herveaux

Sookie calls Alcide’s father to tell him of his son’s death at the same time that Jason calls Hoyt. Sookie is comforted by his father saying that Alcide truly loved her. So, Jackson is on the way to Bon Temps, too and presumably we’ll see him in a future episode as well.

rt704-20

The Magister

I loved the scenes with the Magister tonight, especially when he threw the keys for the VCR store to Pam and she just let them drop. Loved it!!!!

rt704-18

rt704-17

Deaths in this episode

Those who died tonight,

  • Deputy Kenya Jones
  • Rosie
  • Vince and all the HepV vampires

So, over all this was an excellent episode with lots of different story lines that weaved themselves beautifuly into a very satisfying episode. Let’s hope the rest of the season is just as good!
