I am fascinated by the Vampire Authority story line and I’m enjoying learning more about the vampire history. I loved getting to know about the “pre-Bible” and that God was a vampire who made the first vampire on earth, Lilith, in his image. It’s an interesting to ponder that man is not the center of the universe, as we’ve all been taught, and that there might be a being closer to God. However, this is not a philosophical discussion, so let’s get on with my random thoughts about episode 5.02.
Tara and Tearin’ Down The House
Well, Tara sure is speeding around the house and causing lots of destruction. The scene when she went into the kitchen and turned over the refrigerator and broke lamps, etc. was funny enough, but the look on Lafayette’s face when Sookie told him to feed her made me LOL! I totally loved it. Nelsan Ellis stole that scene completely!
We only learn in this episode that Tara is angry. It certainly looks like she isn’t going to learn much from her maker Pam, who immediately leaves Sookie’s after Tara wakes. Before she leaves, she does tell Tara not to feed on Sookie and Lafayette, but the two are in for some interesting times with her during the night. It seems that Tara is not just angry, but a bit confused. Apparently, it’s going to take some time for her brain to start working properly. However, she has already communicated to Sookie and Lafayette that she will never forgive them for having had her turned. Lafayette has second thoughts and tries to stake her but Sookie stops him and the last we see of Tara is when she runs from the house. I actually look forward to seeing more of her.
Pam’s as Maker and Meeting One
From what we’ve seen of her treatment of Tara, Pam is definitely not suited to be a maker. This is interesting since she probably has the strongest maker/progeny relationship with her own maker, Eric. It’s great that the writer’s are giving us Pam’s back story in this episode, we get the introduction to the beginnings of Pam and Eric’s relationship. I sure hope we get to see the why and how Pam gets turned into a vampire by Eric. I’ve often wondered what prompted Eric to turn her. Is she about to die and he does so to save her, or does he just want to be with her? Or, does she ask Eric to turn her?
Wolves/Shapeshifters
There’s not too much going on this episode for the shape shifters and werewolves. The scene from the first episode continues where Sam is saved by Alcide. The meal of Marcus is almost over, but not before Alcide is called out because he won’t partake. I have to admit, don’t blame him, this is just too creepy. Alcide shows his inner struggle to accept what he is and whether to take the role of pack master. I’m betting there will be more to this and he will be pulled back in.
Sam and Luna have a disagreement when Marcus’ mother shows up wanting to open a relationship with Emma. Sam tries to reason with Luna saying not to be too hasty in saying no because if Emma turns out to be a wolf, she will need a pack. Luna’s protective mothering nature comes out with a vengeance and Sam ends up leaving in disgust. And, then of course, since we’ve been set up for it, we see that Luna may have to rethink her disapproval as her daughter is, in fact, a werewolf.
Terry’s nightmares
Terry’s time in Iraq is resurfacing in a series of horrible dreams and visions. All this has happened since Patrick showed up in Bon Temps. Arlene is justifiably worried. We’ve seen flashbacks in Terry’s mind of what might have happened, but so far this story line is a bit flat. I hope it picks up real soon because just watching Terry freaked out over and over is getting a bit boring.
Jason and those who love him and those who don’t
Jason is trying very hard to fix relationships with all that he thinks he has wronged. Hoyt has moved back with his Mama and unfortunately for Jason, he will not accept his numerous apologies. Other than that all he says is the “F” word about 100 times, to his Mama’s displeasure.
Jason would also love to continue to see Jessica, but we can’t be sure if that’s because of her blood that he ingested, or because he is truly attracted to her, or both.
Meanwhile, Rev. Newlin seems to be on a mission to have Jason as his own. He arrives at the Compton Mansion for the purpose of getting Jessica to back off by offering to pay her $10,000. After bargaining the price up to $20,000 Jessica turns and says, “Jason is my friend” and thus refuses the money or won’t let Jason go.
When Rev. Newlin showed up to Jessica’s party he sure sauntered in with style. I think Michael McMillian is brilliant as this character and I want to see more! I also enjoyed seeing Jessica tease him into popping out his fangs and more. Another LOL moment for me in this episode.
Other Odd stuff
Right after we hear Jason’s last name said by Andy, in the next scene we see the “Stake House,” which I’m sure has to be an intentional “pun.” Sookie enters looking to buy some protection, presumably either for what Tara might do or for the possible appearance of Russell Edgington. The redneck guy in the store was great and Suzuki Ingerslev deserves praise for how she decked out the store with all kinds of anti-vampire paraphernalia. It’s amazing what the radical crazies can come up with isn’t it?
The Authority
For me, all the other story lines above pale in comparison to this one. I found it fascinating to hear about the Authority’s history, to see their compound and to begin to understand what it’s all about. The Authority governs all vampires and their goal is for vampires to coexist with humans. They are the source of “mainstreaming.” It’s ironic that Bill is being accused of not want to mainstream since all through the series he has done his best to mainstream, with less than perfect results, unfortunately. So for him to now be accused of being on the other side must be sad for him and much more so than for Eric, who has little affection for the movement. That’s not to say that Eric is at all like Russell, but quite honestly, he has shown in the past that he just doesn’t care. And, prior to his relationship with Sookie he has always given the impression that humans are there only to eat.
But, we have to fear for Bill, Eric and Nora because this time, they are truly in trouble. Nora is probably the one who will meet the true death if any of them do. However, before their fate is decided they all go through the good cop/bad cop interrogation and we see Bill and Eric endure torture from Dieter Braun and Salome. The interrogation scenes were difficult for me to watch, as I’m sure was the intention. Seeing Bill and Eric given injections of silver and having to suffer under the UV lights gave me pain, too.
When we finally got to meet the Authority as a group, I was quite impressed. The cast who play the seven members are perfect. Christopher Meloni and Christopher Heyerdahl especially stood out so far and I hope to see much more from them as well as the others. I was fascinated by the ritual of Roman giving a drop of his blood to each member. I did fear for Eric and Bill, but was glad when Bill managed to “cut a deal” by exclaiming that Russell Edgington is not dead and that he and Eric would be willing to catch him as payment for their lives.
And, then there’s the return of Russell Edgington.
The magnificent Russell is healing in some unknown location being fed humans by some unknown person. I can’t wait to see his return and hope we get to learn finally who it was that dug him up!
