Random Hearts (1999) Review

After the death of their spouses, Police Sergeant Dutch Van Den Broek and US Representative Kay Chandler realize that they had been living a lie and must help each other come to terms with the deceit.

It doesn’t take long to get into the main issue caused by the plot of the film as a pair are brought together following a plane crash and realising that their spouses were actually having an affair. Neither of them had actually been honest about where they were going to either.

It cannot be easy finding out the person you were in love with had been seeing someone else, even less so when you find out after they have tragically died. That is the direction Random Hearts goes in and shows the extra trauma of not being able to ask any questions of mainly why?

Then it all takes another bizarre turn when Dutch and Kay are drawn to one another in a romantic and sexual manner, possibly because they are both feeling the same way and can relate to everything the other is going through? Possibly, but it all just feels a little strange and forced.

Such a shame really that this film doesn’t hit the heights it potentially could have done with Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas in the leading roles but I guess sometimes films just don’t really work out all that well.
