Every time I see a pregnant woman, I reminisce on being pregnant with Adrian and how fortunate I was that he born full-term. Not everyone is so lucky. Lots of babies are born premature (at or before 37 weeks gestation) and that can bring on a lot of complications. These tiny little humans make their entries into the world a little or a lot earlier than expected and require extra care from catching any type of virus, especially seasonal viruses like RSV.
If you are like me and hadn't heard of RSV before, RSV stands for Respiratory Syncytial Virus. This seasonal virus that causes mild to moderate cold-like symptoms, but can cause serious infections in babies, especially premature babies. Each year, worldwide, 13 million babies are born prematurely. That's 13 million babies that can get this horrible virus and because their bodies are still developing, catching RSV can be deadly.
So why am I writing about preemies and RSV? I am writing about this to raise awareness. I'm sure you have a daughter, sister, family member or friend that is either pregnant or may have had a preemie. I know I do and I want to make sure they know about all the complications that can come with early delivery. I know premature delivery is usually an emergency situation but knowledge is power. The more you know, the more you can protect your babies and they can grow up to be happy children!
