One of the wonderful things about pursuing a startup is that I am learning so many new tools and products. Also, since Ed Republic focuses on online learning, I have an excuse to try out new online courses. Today I started taking One Month Rails on Skillshare. The first few videos are about setting up Rails, Git, and Heroku. Over the next 30 days I will be creating what looks like a version of Pinterest. The video seems prerecorded in that the Rails version the instructor is using is already out of date. However, it's still been extremely helpful and definitely worth $20, even from the first 2 videos.
I'm amazed at how difficult and obscure it is to set up development tools and environments. It's almost all command line prompts - even for my next application, I will have to go through it again step-by-step, since it'd be impossible for me to try to replicate from memory. The good news is that there seem to be lots of tools to make things a bit easier - I don't know what people did before Git and Heroku existed, for example.
You can follow along with my project here. Currently it's just the default Ruby application information.
