Rachel Sermanni has shared ‘What Can I Do’, the lead single from her third album ‘So It Turns’ (self-released on 23 August). Rachel describes her sound as ‘folk noir’ it’s a fitting description for this new single that combines haunting gothic melodies with P.J. Harvey-style assertiveness before throwing in a touch of Stick in the Wheel’s modern folk.
Written in the wake of Donald Trump’s election victory while Brexit was on the horizon, Rachel sums up the hopelessness that many of us felt in primal and stark detail. She looks to find a light that will help get her out of this dark place asking ‘What can I do? before then pondering over ‘boats in the sea’, ‘suits in the chamber’ and how ‘I don’t know if they care for anyone at all’.
A percentage of proceedings from purchases of this song will be donated to Extinction Rebellion Scotland.
