For Truthout, Christen A. Smith maintains that while we must grieve the Charlie Hebdo dead, we must beware of misconstruing racism as a democratic ideal:
Simply put: Political cartoons are free speech, but they are not always innocent and inherently democratic. 

And I think Smith is absolutely correct about this.
