Question Nine

How common is it for trans people to feel completely comfortable in their body after physically transitioning to the extent to which they want?

Roz: We get old, we get fat, we have accidents. I am at home in my skin, but there are parts of that skin which could be better.

CN: As common as it is for anyone to feel comfortable in their body, as far as I know, so long as there’s a moderate to good surgical outcome (for people who’ve had surgery). There’s a little more information in the excellent 2012 Trans Mental Health Survey. I think it’s worth pointing out, as always, that different trans people have different transitional needs – some people will want neither surgery nor hormones, some a mix, some everything that’s available. And, both pre- and post- physical transition, trans people are just as likely to be adversely affected by our society’s toxic ‘beauty’ standards as cis people are.
